“Can Sacombank evolve from Vietnam's largest joint-stock retail bank into an open banking platform — embedding its lending, payments, and tax-filing capabilities into third-party ecosystems via its Open API — while maintaining card and compliance leadership domestically?”
Founded in 1991 as Vietnam's first joint-stock commercial bank in Ho Chi Minh City, Sacombank grew over three decades into one of Vietnam's largest retail banks by assets, personnel, and customer count. In the 2010s, Sacombank expanded aggressively into cards (achieving continuous PCI DSS certification from 2014) and digital channels including the Sacombank Pay e-wallet. By the mid-2020s, the bank pivoted toward an open banking and embedded finance model — launching its OPEN API platform in 2026 and embedding lending and tax solutions via partnerships with MISA and VNPAY — positioning itself as a platform provider rather than solely a branch-based retail bank.
