“Can a bank-owned national instant payments scheme become the default rail for everyday South African transfers before non-bank wallets capture that interface?”
PayShap is not a fintech in the traditional venture sense — it is South Africa's national instant payments scheme, operated by PayInc (formerly BankservAfrica), the country's automated clearing house jointly owned by the Reserve Bank and commercial banks. It enables credit-push, low-value, instant interbank transfers using ShapIDs (proxies like mobile numbers). PayShap Request (request-to-pay) launched in late 2024 to extend the scheme. PayShap itself does not consume embedded finance vendors — it IS the rail that other South African banks and fintechs build on top of.
