The story

Founded 2018 as a SoftBank/Yahoo Japan JV leveraging Paytm's QR-code technology to bring cashless payment to Japan. Has expanded beyond QR payments into a full financial super-app — adding insurance mini-apps (2021), digital wage receipt (PayPay Paycheck, 2023+), investment experiences, and integration with sister entity PayPay Bank for direct bank-to-wallet flows. Now 74M registered users (roughly half of Japan's population); the strategic story is consolidating Japanese consumer financial services inside one app ahead of a planned U.S. IPO that was paused in 2026.
