“Can PayPal become the end-to-end financial operating system for small businesses — owning payments, lending, insurance, and spend management — while monetizing its massive transaction data advantage?”
PayPal began as a digital wallet and peer-to-peer payments company, then became the dominant checkout button for e-commerce after its eBay acquisition. Spun out in 2015, it aggressively expanded into embedded financial services for merchants — launching Working Capital loans (2013), acquiring Braintree for card processing infrastructure, and building out BNPL via Pay Later and Pay in 4. In 2022–2025 it layered in insurance (Aon/CoverWallet), expanded BNPL at scale via capital-light receivables sales to KKR and Blue Owl, and repositioned as a full financial services operating system for small and medium businesses.
