The story

Nordea was formed in 2000 via pan-Nordic banking mergers and has evolved from a traditional retail/corporate bank into a platform bank with a significant open banking and embedded finance agenda. From 2018 onward, Nordea invested heavily in its API Market and Open Banking portal, offering Premium APIs (Instant Reporting, Corporate Payout, cross-border payments) beyond PSD2 compliance minimums. The bank now explicitly markets itself as an embedded finance infrastructure provider, embedding banking services into third-party corporate ERP, TMS, and fintech platforms, while retaining its full-service retail, corporate, and capital markets banking operations.
