Can a traditionally wholesale-focused Italian merchant bank sustain a diversified premium from simultaneously leading in large-corporate advisory, consumer credit, and wealth management — while digitising its credit and product-issuance infrastructure?

The story

Founded in 1946 as a wholesale merchant bank primarily financing large Italian corporates and holding strategic equity stakes, Mediobanca has evolved into a diversified specialized financial group spanning Wealth Management, Consumer Banking (through Compass), and Corporate & Investment Banking. The group has systematically broadened from wholesale advisory and lending into consumer credit, factoring (MBFACTA), leasing (Selmabipiemme), and private banking (Mediobanca Premier), effectively becoming a full-service financial group while retaining its identity as an investment bank. The embedded finance angle is internal: the group built Mediobanca Innovation Services as a captive IT entity to digitise credit origination (instant lending within one minute for existing Compass clients) and launched the Agora platform for automated structured-product issuance.
