“Can a digitally-native, no-fee unsecured personal loan product for prime borrowers survive as a standalone brand inside a large regional bank holding company?”
LightStream traces its roots to PeopleFirst Finance LLC (1995), one of the earliest internet-based auto lenders. After evolving through the FirstAgain brand offering unsecured consumer loans, it launched as LightStream in 2012 as a digital-first lending division of SunTrust Bank targeting consumers with good credit. Following the SunTrust-BB&T merger to form Truist in 2019, LightStream operated as a distinct brand within Truist. Truist subsequently announced a consolidation move to absorb LightStream into its broader consumer business, effectively sunsetting the standalone LightStream brand.
