Kiwibank Partner

Can Kiwibank's digital-first, open-banking-led strategy allow it to win SME and retail market share from the Australian-owned incumbents in New Zealand?

The story

Founded in 2002 as a retail bank using New Zealand Post's branch network, Kiwibank has progressively modernised its infrastructure and embedded finance partnerships. Over the past few years it has accelerated its open banking rollout — becoming the first NZ bank to go live across all digital channels ahead of the regulatory deadline — and layered in third-party insurance partners (Tower, nib) and an accounting-integrated fast-lending product (Fast Capital via Xero/MYOB). The overall trajectory is from a postal-branch bank to a digitally-led challenger competing with the Australian-owned big four.
