The story

Kaufland is a brick-and-mortar hypermarket chain (Schwarz Group) that pivoted aggressively into e-commerce with the 2021 launch of kaufland.de, rapidly growing to become one of Germany's largest online marketplaces with 13,000+ sellers. Since then, Kaufland has layered embedded finance on top: a mobile wallet (Kaufland Pay via Bluecode), a BNPL/installment credit partnership (Consors Finanz/BNP Paribas), seller cash-advance facilitation (Storfund), and insurance distribution (DA Direkt/Zurich). The strategy mirrors that of Amazon-style 'super-apps', using loyalty (Kaufland Card XTRA) as the anchor to expand financial services across both consumers and marketplace sellers.
