“Can a mid-sized Cypriot bank modernize its digital experience and operational infrastructure quickly enough to retain market leadership now that it operates as a subsidiary within the larger Eurobank Group?”
Founded in 1976 as a retail-focused bank in Cyprus backed by the Greek Orthodox Church, Hellenic Bank grew steadily through organic expansion. The 2018 acquisition of assets from the failed Cyprus Cooperative Bank vaulted it into the position of the largest retail bank on the island. In 2023 Eurobank (Greece) acquired 100% of Hellenic Bank, integrating it into a broader pan-Hellenic banking group — the bank now trades under a 'Member of Eurobank Group' identity. The embedded finance angle is mainly on the consumption side: adopting Backbase for digital banking experience and partnering with LTIMindtree for core transformation, rather than building independent fintech infrastructure.
