“Can a self-operated Italian fintech bank—combining banking, trading and wealth management in a single proprietary account—scale its low-cost brokerage-led model across Europe while acting as its own infrastructure provider?”
Founded in 1999 as one of Italy's first internet banks, FinecoBank built a proprietary single-account model combining banking, brokerage, and wealth management — distinct from pure neobanks in that it operates its own banking licence and technology stack. It expanded to the UK in 2019, becoming one of the few Italian banks with a direct retail presence there. Rather than relying on BaaS middleware, Fineco operates its own regulated infrastructure and exposes PSD2-compliant APIs as a data provider (ASPSP) rather than a consumer of open banking. The embedded-finance angle is primarily as an infrastructure provider to TPPs, not as a purchaser of embedded-finance components.
