Can a specialist UK open-banking rail — built on FCA-regulated PIS and AIS — become the default account-to-account payment and financial data infrastructure for UK government and enterprise?

The story

Founded in 2017 as a pure-play open banking infrastructure provider, Ecospend built its stack from scratch around FCA-regulated Payment Initiation Services (PIS) and Account Information Services (AIS). Its defining inflection point came in 2020–2021 when it became the Open Banking provider to HMRC — the first such government deployment globally — cementing its public-sector credentials. Ecospend was subsequently acquired by Trustly, the Swedish open-banking payments company, becoming its UK operating entity. Post-acquisition, the Ecospend brand has been maintained for B2B and public-sector go-to-market while infrastructure and end-user terms are progressively unified with Trustly's global platform.
