Clearstream

Can a global ICSD/CSD expand beyond settlement and custody to become the single-entry-point infrastructure layer for collateral, liquidity, and fund distribution for institutional clients worldwide?

The story

Clearstream is a post-trade financial market infrastructure company (owned by Deutsche Börse Group), operating as both an ICSD (Clearstream Banking S.A., Luxembourg) and a CSD (Clearstream Europe AG, Germany). Its core business is securities settlement, custody, and collateral management for financial institutions globally. Over time it has expanded into collateral and liquidity solutions, fund services (order routing, DVP settlement, distribution fee collection), and automation of trade documentation through third-party partnerships. The embedded finance angle is narrow: Clearstream provides the rails on which other financial institutions operate, rather than embedding consumer-facing finance products.
