The story

Founded 2017 by two ex-NAB executives as a digital, direct-to-consumer non-bank home loan lender targeting Australia's $1.7T mortgage market with no fees, automatic rate matching, and offset/redraw features. Originally direct-only, Athena pivoted to also support a broker channel via the 2022 REA Group/Mortgage Choice partnership, launching Mortgage Choice Freedom and LMG-branded white-label products in 2023. Funded by wholesale debt from major institutions (Macquarie, RESIMAC, Homeloans Ltd) rather than holding deposits, Athena is positioned as a tech-first mortgage manager rather than a bank.
