The story

Founded in 1975 as a black-owned South African bank, African Bank collapsed in 2014 and was rescued via SARB curatorship, relaunching as a digital-first retail bank. Since 2022 the bank has been diversifying beyond unsecured personal loans into transactional banking, savings, credit cards, insurance, and (from 2025) SME digital lending — all positioned ahead of a planned IPO.
